Minna Shuugou

Minna Shuugou is a free monthly Indo-Japanese language and cultural meetup in Bengaluru. The name means roughly “Everyone, gather!”, and that is essentially the entire idea. Japanese people, Japanese learners, and anyone curious about the culture can come to Cubbon Park, sit down with strangers, and start talking. You do not need to know Japanese and you do not need to already know anyone there.

Usually around 40 to 70 people attend. Each session has enough structure to make conversation easy without turning it into something people passively watch. There might be a discussion theme, origami, kamishibai storytelling, Tanabata wishes, Japanese games, show-and-tell, or a collaboration with another community. The activities are mostly there to get strangers comfortable enough to become people who know each other.

That sounds simple, but Minna Shuugou changed my life more than I expected. Before I got involved, most of the people around me were developers, founders, or people whose lives looked broadly like mine. Suddenly I was regularly meeting people with completely different professions, ages, backgrounds, priorities, and definitions of a good life. Listening to their stories expanded my own sense of what mattered.

I design the posters and work on the website, but that is almost secondary to why I keep participating. Minna Shuugou made me realise that there is considerably more to life than succeeding in a career. Community, friendship, curiosity, and simply having somewhere you belong can be meaningful in their own right. It is one of the reasons I now care so much about helping create spaces where people can make genuine connections.
